For a balanced ecosystem that provides high wildlife value, start with keystone plants, then focus on diversity. This creates a check and balance that helps keep pests to a minimum and ensures high wildlife diversity.
Quercus (oaks) and Prunus (cherry and plum trees/bushes) are the top two keystone woody species in central Ohio.
When adding diversity to your plantings, consider adding trees that bloom throughout the growing season, a variety of fall colors, and a variety of fruits, nuts and seeds for winter sustenance and interest.
