SPRING EPHEMERALS

These wildflowers emerge before the canopy fills in, banishing the winter blahs with the first splashes of spring color, and providing critical early nourishment for pollinators.

Spring ephemerals rely heavily on underground mycorrhizal fungi to extract nutrients from the cold soils of spring. Soils covered with plants and their residue create the perfect environment for these beneficial soil microbes, and thus, for spring ephemerals, as well as many other plant species.
