Full sun.
Medium to dry, sandy, rocky, or poor soils. Does not like rich soils.
Wildlife Value: Host plant for 5 species of Lepidoptera larvae, including wavy-lined emerald, sunflower moth, and 2 specialist moths. Attracts hummingbirds, butterflies, moths, and other pollinators. Birds eat the seeds. Drought tolerant. Potentially threatened in Ohio.
