This hardy, fast-growing deciduous tree grows 60 to 90 feet or taller with a straight trunk and narrow, open crown. Fragrant, resin-covered buds break out into glossy, green leaves that turn yellow in fall. Balsam poplar, a member of the Willow family, is found in colder climates and moist to wet soils. The large root system and suckering habit render this tree more suitable for mixed-tree plantings and restoration projects than for urban plantings near sidewalks, septic tanks, and other structures. Balsam poplar is a powerhouse in wildlife value, hosting 237 species of Lepidoptera larvae.
