From summer to fall, pinkish-purple flowers are densely arranged in large, cylindrical clusters up to 8 inches long. Spotted phlox prefers full sun to light shade, moist conditions, and sandy or silty loam. Organic mulching material is an excellent way to help retain moisture, for this plant is not drought tolerant and will need supplemental water in dry conditions. It may be short-lived in less-than-ideal conditions, but in the right site, it self-seeds and spreads to form colonies. Spotted phlox has better mildew resistance than some Phlox species, but it still needs good air circulation and watering at the roots rather than overhead.
