One of the largest (4 to 8 feet tall) and most spectacular of our native lilies, Turk's cap has huge, orange flowers that resemble caps once worn by Turks. Up to 40 flowers have been recorded on a single plant. It blooms between July and September and prefers partly shaded sites with moist, well-drained soils. In the wild, it's found in swamps, wet meadows, and edges of woods.
Plant Characteristics:
Grows 4-8' or even up to 10' tall.
Prefers part shade.
Prefers moist, well-drained, loamy or sandy soils with some acidity. Needs consistent moisture.
Extremely recurved petals and sepals are dotted with brown spots.
Wildlife Value:
Hummingbirds and large insects seek the nectar.
