The northern bayberry is a dense, rounded, deciduous shrub that grows 6 to 8 feet tall. The leathery, grayish-green leaves are aromatic when crushed. It prefers full sun and moist, sandy, acidic soils; however, it adapts to a range of soil conditions, including clay. It's tolerant of drought, erosion, high winds, salt spray, poor soils, and wet conditions. It tends to sucker and form colonies.
