This delicate, climbing biennial vine is uncommon to rare throughout its range in North America and endangered in Ohio. In its first year, the vine is a small mound of lacy foliage. During its second spring, the vine shoots up to 12 feet and blooms with clusters of pendulous, whitish-pink flowers. It needs a fine-textured structure to cling to, such as netting, mesh, or a shrub or tree. The spongy blooms, which are not unlike those of Asian bleeding-heart, dangle from the vine June to July. Allegheny vine thrives in dappled light or morning sun and afternoon shade. It adapts to poor, average to dry soils but tends to be more vigorous in rich, moist soils.
Plant Characteristics:
Grows 2-12' long, spreading only by seed, unlike most native vines which spread via underground and even above-ground runners.
Prefers dappled or part shade. Tolerates full sun in cooler climates.
Grows in rich, moist soils and adapts to poor, rocky, dryish soils.
